Kentaro Yamada on Art and Life

Yoko Ono recently tweeted “Watch the sunset. Feel the earth moving.” When was the last time I watched the sun set? When was the last time I felt the earth moving? I don’t remember.

London based artist Kentaro Yamada has been thinking about the phenomenon of sunsets for a long time. When at art school, he remembers projecting slides of sunsets on the wall during a critique session. Even though people appreciated the images, they concluded that a sunset was not art.

“Why can’t such a beautiful experience, like seeing a sun setting on the horizon be an artwork? An overwhelming experience of our planet rotating, the changing of color and light over a time, seeing the sun setting towards the horizon, followed by an amazing change of colour in the sky”.

How can a sunset become art?
