There’s no denying that Vincent Van Gogh—that crazy, ear chopping genius— knew what he was doing with a paintbrush, especially when his masterpiece Starry Night came out of Arles and landed into a world of enchanted fans. It’s always been a work that is so fundamentally stirring and universally loved: mention Starry Night in any context and even the least interested in art will confess how affecting Van Gogh can be. In the last year alone, both Woody Allen and the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte have used it as a living, breathing muse.
It’s only logical, then, for Starry Night to step into the 21st century and become reinvented as an interactive animation piece for audiences to become more (and literally) lost and pulled into the depths of this gorgeous work. Petros Vrellis has brought Starry Night to life with some clever animation and touch technology through open source C++ toolkit openFrameworks which allows audiences to ripple through Van Gogh’s voluptuously curved clouds and flutter light about as it swirls like galaxies in the air. Delicate, appropriate sounds have been added to the artistic experience so that tingles correspond to your touch, making Starry Night that much more enthralling.
