The Art Gallery Apocalypse

If natural events and new films are anything to go by, we may be expecting the end of days anytime now. The art world is also joining in on the doom and gloom; to celebrate the Tate Britain‘s major retrospective of John Martin’s work, director Simon Burrill was commission to create a short film inspired by Martin’s apocalyptic visages.

The Great Day of His Wrath takes its title from Martin’s painting of the same name and introduces us to our heroine, who finds herself in a desolate, subterranean cave system. Upon reaching the surface, she finds herself living in one of the 19th Century artist’s works—it’s all very fire and brimstone.

To view one of Martin’s romantic, terrifying and awe-inspiring works in person is an experience visitors to the Tate can have until 15 January 2012.
