A Love Letter to Syracuse

By Alexander Ford | October 6th, 2010 in Talks

Following on from his monumental work along the train lines of downtown Philadelphia, Steve Powers is back with another community art project. This time, the work involved transforming the decrepit bridges that divide two very disparate neighbourhoods in upstate New York.

Classic Collegiate Collections

By Alexander Ford | October 6th, 2010 in Fashion

Straight up, if there was one style I wish my personal brand was more aligned with, it’s “Preppy.” Just want to play tennis and holiday at Martha’s Vineyard and have a cute girlfriend who dresses like a boy and go sailing on a sweet yacht called Long Weekend and have wealthy parents and attend a private New England college and holiday in Nantucket and own a pair of those Band Of Outsiders x Sperry Topsiders that came out a few years ago.

The Other Side Of Immigration

By Alexander Ford | October 6th, 2010 in Film

Earlier this year, the Arizona state legislature passed a controversial bill that practically legalised racial profiling, forcing police officers to target and detain people they “reasonably suspected” were living in the U.S. illegally. Among the backlash that followed was The Sound Strike— a call for artists to boycott touring the state until the law was repealed…

Pac-Man x Moleskine

By Alexander Ford | October 6th, 2010 in Art

2010 marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Pac-Man. It also marks the 29th anniversary of the release of Pac-Man Fever — a top ten smash hit from Ohioan duo, Buckner and Garcia (their 1982 follow up, Do The Donkey Kong, was less successful), and the 28th anniversary of the release of Pac-Man: The Animated Series, which, for those of you who haven’t seen it, is a 42-part opus..

HOW SHOES ARE MADE.

By Alexander Ford | September 29th, 2010 in Fashion

For some reason, I assumed that in 2K10, shoes would be designed, manufactured, and packaged by a series of computers (or one multi-purpose computer). As it turns out, I was wrong. While machines have been worked into the shoemaking process, it seems to remain very much a craftsman’s game- as evidenced in this glimpse into the production process at Pointer.

You Thought We Wouldn’t Notice

By Alexander Ford | September 29th, 2010 in Music

In a recent post on their website, Icelandic hair-metal gods (ololol), Sigur Rós exposed a handful of commercials which seem to blatantly rip-off their music. While the article is careful to avoid language that could ironically get the band sued, it claims that, in the past, there have been certain companies that have been dissatisfied when their offers to license Sigur Rós jawns have been inevitably declined with a friendly, “Nei.”

I Wish I Was Taller

By Alexander Ford | September 29th, 2010 in Film

The New Yorker has enlisted the services of Schwartzman and Roman Coppola to show off their new iPad app for subscribers. Needless to say, the resulting instructional video has found my level, and also made me think: “Shit, man, I forgot that the second season of Bored To Death started last Sunday.”

2 Guys, 600 Pillows

By Alexander Ford | September 22nd, 2010 in Music

First up: No, this isn’t a twisted shit-fetish video. It is, however, a viral music video. If you feel viral music videoed-out after yesterday’s OK Go post, or if just generally, the idea of a viral music video makes you feel sick to your stomach, look away now!

Interview with Takashi Murakami

By Alexander Ford | September 22nd, 2010 in Talks

For those of you who are unaware, there is a Takashi Murakami retrospective currently showing at the Château de Versailles, in possibly the greatest pairing since “summer” and “the entire Sublime discography.” To mark the occasion, Murakami recently spoke with Vernissage correspondent, Christophe Ecoffet, and while I have a feeling that his Japanese may have been translated by someone without a native English tongue, the interview covers some pretty interesting ground.

KM3D-1

By Alexander Ford | September 22nd, 2010 in Fashion

Y’know how James Cameron is always preaching about 3-D, and how it can cheapen certain kinds of cinema? Well, CHEAP-ON, I say. 3-D is perfectly suited to shitty horror movies. Just as the medium works brilliantly for advertising, or, in this case, a conceptual video clip for AnOther Magazine that involves Kate Moss throwing a bunch of Swarovski crystals (verified at the end of the credits) in yer face.
