Edison’s Victorian-Era YouTube

Thomas Edison knew what the public wanted.  Forget the light bulb and the phonograph, ol’ Eds knew that what we really wanted to see was sex, film and…boxing cats.  Do we owe the popularity of silly cat videos to this guy?

Along with numerous other inventions, Edison was responsible for creating the first motion picture camera that actually worked and was credited as the inventor of the movie industry itself.  Never one to shy away from the camera (nor to miss a perfect PR opportunity), Edison was the one to capture the first scandalous on-screen kiss way back when in 1896.  The 25-second clip uploaded to YouTube by Brain Pickings, featuring the inventor himself and Canadian actress May Irwin locking lips absolutely shocked Victorian audiences at a time when PDAs were so not okay.

Well, the times they have-a-changed, but what remains spot on is Edison’s idea of mass media and what audiences want.  He released ‘viral’ videos of girl-on-girl boxing, acrobatic strip-teases, and funny/stupid cat videos before YouTube and TV and viral meant anything.   It seems he knew audiences needed something cheeky and entertaining if they were to watch and evolve the technology.

He sure got us…
