Obviously a huge, huge hit. Nicki’s been on the scene, visible under Weezy’s tutelage for maybe 3 years, but Superbass made her a legit pop star. It was exciting to see her singing/rapping crossover succeed. Women in the game have been singing in addition to tight rapping for decades now, from Salt ‘N’ Pepa to Missy to TLC, and I think it serves to both soften and then, contrarily, legitimize them. Nicki’s goal was always to sing; Weezy and Young Money signed her after hearing her version of Dead Wrong, and that’s just straight spitting. But Nicki infused more and more singing into her work over the years, and I think Superbass is her most perfected throw yet.
