Pregnant Demi Moore
Like a lightening rod through water, the image of Demi Moore nude with a swollen baby belly on the cover of Vanity Fair had cranky readers and newsstand passersby shouting “grotesque” and “obscene”. Adding fuel to the critics’ fire, it was the first time Vanity Fair had a naked cover girl. Annie Leibovitz’s photo of Moore seven months pregnant, her hand cupping her breasts to frame her belly is a strong image of female empowerment even if it was not seen that way at the time. While it was an image that caused a lot of controversy, ultimately it became a celebration of the female body and sparked a host of celebrity copycat nude pregnant magazine shoots.
