It’s no secret that American Idol has always been a boys club a heart. As the ongoing minority in the judges forum, female judges have generally been relegated to ditzy, sometimes drunk Paula Abdul, forgettable Kara DioGuardi and pleasantly bland J.Lo. Though that mantle was looking like it’d be upheld by the casting of Mariah Carey, Minaj in the 4th judging spot could actually stir the balance up a bit, and produce results that aren’t predictable from the first episode. Plus, if the rumours of Mariah being more than a little dissatisfied with Minaj’s offer are true, the ensuring catfights would still be reality T.V. in all its stupid perfection.

There are teachers, students, ministers, druggists, barbers, waiters, city-council members, librarians, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, babies, drunk-driving victims: the spine, hopes, pride and regrets of a town that has shaped many lives for both good and bad.
