Mise-en-Scene, Directed by Alexander Haessner
Before he set out to create some of the most evocative fashion films in recent years, German-born, Brooklyn-based Alexander Haessner explored many different avenues of artistic expression. From fine art and portrait photography, to shooting films on a high-speed camera, Haessner’s quest to tell stories eventually led him to the emerging fashion film genre, where he’s carved a niche as an emerging talent whose narratives take precedent over the exhibition of clothes.

His new film, titled Mise-en-Scene, sees Salt star Olya Zueva star as a model who steps onto an ordinary photoshoot, and begins to falter as her internal reality threatens to overtake the external. Mise-en-Scene was conceived and produced exclusively for Portable’s Fashion on Film party.

Salton Sea, Directed by Dagmar Weaver-Madsen and Alex DeMille
Dagmar Weaver-Madsen and Alex DeMille met while attending UCLA for their Masters in Film and soon after formed YETTi; a small boutique production company that explores the intersection of film, fashion, music videos, and experimental art. The directing duo were recently awarded the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers, William A. Fraker Heritage Award for Best Cinematography for their short, The Absence.

Amongst the twisted metal and fish skeleton beaches of the beautiful and desolate Salton Sea, Photogenics Model Alli Cripe explores the idea of what happens when dreams decay. Cripe is styled in All Saints‘ classic Parachute dress, with jewellery by Los Angeles boutique, Wasteland. Inspired by an original wartime parachute, the double layered silk dress took 75 hours to create and consists of over 10m of fabric. All Saints are known for their distressed, asymmetrical and tailored pieces, with an acute attention to detail — fine draping, delicate flowing fabrics, intricate beading, fine embroidery, and in this case a truly unique silhouette. Salton Sea documents Cripe’s relationship with the landscape, as they transcend into one and become part of the decayed dream.

Coney Island Baby, Directed by Suzie Zabrowska
When Portable favorite Suzie Zabrowska was a model in New York City in the late 1980s she began taking a Super 8 camera down the runway with her, capturing first-hand footage that is now stored in the Metropolitan Museum Fashion Archives. She continues to make short films, with Isabel Toledo a frequent collaborator, and Coney Island Baby is her latest offering.

Kid Congo and the Pink Money Birds specifically created the soundtrack for the film, Isabel Toledo provided the clothes and the beautiful glass beads are made from mouth blown glass by Ruben Toledo — each bead a unique piece of art. The film follows model Tahlia Rich as she pieces together a mysterious plane crash and magic glass beads which hold the clues to the mystical valhalla of the ‘Parachute Jump’.

Coney Island Baby will premiere at Portable’s Fashion on Film Party, presented by Russian Standard Vodka on Tuesday, February 28th.

NOMIA S/S12, Directed by Columbine Goldsmith
NOMIA designer and Portable darling, Yara Flinn took inspiration from US artist, Georgia O’Keeffe’s travels to New Mexico for her S/S12 collection. From a starting point of primarily neutral tones, Flinn’s use of color continuously evolves with each collection. With blocks of aqua, lilac and coral running through the S/S12 collection, Flinn attributes the combinations and juxtapositions of color as the inspiration for her stories.

The short film, created and directed by Columbine Goldsmith was shot in Montauk and pays homage to the late O’Keeffe. Californian native Goldsmith, shoots film and still photography for fashion clients including, Dazed, Nowness, Vanity Fair, Self Service, Dossier and W, amongst others. The film premiered at NOMIA’s presentation during New York Fashion Week.

Study S/S12, Directed by Robert Clyde Grima
Brooklyn label, Study was formed in 2010 by Montreal native, Tara St James. St James — a strong and driving presence among young sustainable designers — lends her skills to various organizations including The Uniform Project, a fundraising platform using sustainable design to raise money for underprivileged children. St James sources all of her fabrics from fair trade organizations in India, Bolivia and Madagascar. Through specialized production, Study has become known for its sustainability and fair trade practices.

Directed by Australian native Robert Clyde Grimes, the S/S12 film explores St James’ signature color and pattern compositions, while paying homage to her present surroundings of New York. Portable will premiere the film at the event on February 28th, 2012.

Between Time, Directed by  Zoja Smutny & Guntar Kravis
In Between Time, four locations become settings for an alternative use of space as six dancers explore the resilience of women through fashion, furniture and fairy tales. Directed by Zoja Smutny and Guntar Kravis and composed by Arcade Fire’s Sarah Neufeld with costumes designed by Kym Chambers, this beautifully choreographed piece challenges the more traditional understanding of what constitutes a “fashion film”.

Between Time premiered in the Court Métrage at the 64th annual Festival de Cannes and Portable is excited to host the film’s New York premiere in February.

SIX, Directed by Bruna Coutinho
Portable favorite, Bruna Coutinho honours talented beauty artist and fellow Brazilian, Teo Miranda in her film SIX. The talented 21 year old filmmaker and photographer regularly works alongside Brazil’s finest designers and stylists, showcasing the finess of the local fashion industry to a global audience.

A film about what it means to be female and feminine, SIX features six different women embodying stereotypes through fashion, including an androgynous style which “represents the duality between women and men”. The film marks a big step forward for Bruna, as it is the first time she’s ever taken total control of her models and given them specific directions and characters to guide their performances.

Portable is excited to introduce New York to Bruna Coutinho through the premiere of her latest film, SIX.

THE MODERN UTOPIAN – As Above So Below, Directed by Cara Stricker
Australian jewelry designers MANIAMANIA return with their most recent collection, The Modern Utopian, an exploration into Californian cults and communes in the 1960s and 70s.  Fusing together elements of rock ‘n’ roll and spirituality, the collection is a modern representation of western romanticism meets eastern transcendence.  Starring the free spirited Dree Hemingway, Cara Stricker‘s film creates a nostalgic and visually stunning throwback to an era of true spirituality.

The two films, explore that of MANIAMANIA’s collection’s dichotomous subject — the intersection of rock and roll hedonism and eastern mysticism that defined California’s subcultural scene in the sixties and seventies. ”So Below” encapsulates the mood of the dark place in which light is bred and enlightenment begins, “As Above” exploring mood resonating with the idea of enlightenment. The ‘As Above So Below’ story is an engraved harmony of zodiac, pagan, wicca and alchemy symbols with the Latin verbatim “As Above” and “So Below” iconic to The Source Family commune’s psychedelic house band Ya Ho Wa 13.

At a time where film innovators of the 60′s and 70′s, were taking experimental form to create mysticism that felt tangible to the onlooker, the film readdresses these techniques in new ways, evoked by Tamila Purvis and Melanie Kamsler likening to combinating the elementals of “Inspired mysticism, the magic and natural beauty of mineral crystal forms, the exploration of old techniques in modern ways”.  Focussing on hand worked in camera effects, and frame by frame compositions, the sense of fantasy seep through moments of experimental lighting playing off the naturally dimming sun around around us.

Cara Stricker — who’s worked with MANIAMANIA on past films — now resides in New York and has worked exclusively with notable clients including Vogue.com, Alexander Wang, Vs. Magazine, Dossier Journal and Oyster Magazine. Stricker’s work has been published in an extensive list of publications and websites internationally, including Harpersbazaare.com.au, oystermag.com, russhmagazine.com, Rolling Stone Mexico, Sex & Fashion and Yen Magazine and is a contributor in the upcoming LOVEWANT magazine to be launched in the US next month.

Oh My, Directed by Zaiba Jabbar
Keeping to the theme of the Beast Unbound, the cast of Piers Atkinson’s AW12 film Oh My, searched for their own ‘animal within’, prowling the darkness with only intrepid Zaiba to catch their hidden activities. The film, directed by Zaiba Jabbar, gathered a group of Atkinson’s close friends (and some of East London’s Next Big Things) and was shot entirely using a variety of iphone apps.

Based in London, Jabbar explores the intersections of fashion and music through her films; as it’s this unification of genres that influences and interests her work most. Jabbar is a regular contributor to iD-Online and VICE STYLE, as well as Dianne Pernet’s A Shaded View on Fashion blog. Her work has also been featured on Vogue.it and Dazed Digital.

What’s Up?, Directed by Gia Coppola
Gia Coppola entered the world of filmmaking in 1995, appearing in her then-uncle Spike Jonze‘s music video for surf band Wax’s seminal track California. Since then, the granddaughter of Francis Ford has carved her own niche in the world of fashion film-making, producing work for Opening Ceremony and Wren.

In What’s Up?, Gia follows in the heels of her aunt Sofia, crafting a quiet and pervasive story of a teenage girl who, in a world of reality TV, social networking and overwhelmed parents, takes solace in her wardrobe of Wren pieces. Founded in 2007 by Melissa Coker in Lake Forest, Illinois, Wren has an affiliation with lost girls and was named after Jenny Wren, a “sad winsome little creature who makes dresses for dolls in Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend.”
