If you saw the recently released Spring 2012 ad campaign from Chanel, you must have been thinking, “Karl.. what are you doing, models dangling over the sea..? What if the couture gets wet?!” Well, it did get wet (apparently they have more to spare), and we can now see/drool over the making of the Spring print campaign in this behind-the-scenes video featuring classic Chanel with acrobatics and a flawless seaside.
In what seems to be the most perfect day ever on the French coast (naturally), models Saskia de Brauw and Joan Smalls practically float above water for Chanel designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld set the the strains of Andrea Perry and Sarah Sharp’s musical duo Kaliyo. The parallel bars and pommel horse are perhaps a little bit closer to land than first thought, but Joan is definitely, dangerously hanging off a rope ladder in that stunning white feather-detail dress.
The collection itself features classic black and white and signature Chanel pearls, with ivory swimsuits and clear plastic jackets that give a sense of the sea that Karl has harnessed in this campaign. The cute baby ankle socks and wristbands are a result of the impeccable styling of Carine Roitfeld—this shoot is her second season in a row for Chanel. The sun-drenched video, compared to the simple black and white shots for the print campaign, is practically made for daydreaming.
And yes, they go swimming in couture.
