Dr. Martens: The Thinkers’ Boots for Half a Century

By Brodie Lancaster / July 16th, 2010 in Fashion / 95 views

The ubiquitous Dr. Marten boot is worn by schoolteachers and students, train drivers and the girl you spend your morning commute staring at. Your dad wore it and your kids probably will too. The shoe has become so a part of our culture that it’s hard to imagine a time when it was only worn by workmen or the working class, and not hipsters in street style pictures the world over. Since its inception 50 years ago, the Doc has formed the base of uniforms for punks, skinheads and, most recently, the flannel-wearing grunge kids of the 90s.

To celebrate its birthday, the folks at Dr. Martens are releasing videos of modern musicians covering tracks that they feel represent “the spirit of the people who’ve worn DM’s over the past 50 years”. Noisettes covered the Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen in Love With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve, Verbal + Yoon are covering the Runaways’ Cherry Bomb , Michael Davis is lending his grizzly dulcet tones to Cold War Kids’ Something is Not Right With Me and, the one we’re most excited for, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club reimagining the Pogues’ Dirty Old Town.

Keep an eye on the Dr. Martens anniversary website to watch new videos as they’re released.
