New York-based, Thailand-born designer Phillip Lim, showcases his latest SS12 collection for label 3.1 Phillip Lim to futuristic, ethereal effect in Robert Hamada’s fashion video Improv-isualists, with backing track NY is Killing Time by Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX.

Lim describes the brand’s aesthetic as an “approachable designer experience with beautiful everyday classics accented with touches of madness.” These touches of unexpected anarchy indeed punctuate the visual experience of the SS12 collection. A crisp white shirt is layered over a crepe thin undershirt and finished with a dip dyed collar, a pair of elegantly tailored black trousers feature an unexpectedly extended hem and side zipper and stacked, creeper style shoes are updated with a subtler platform and snakeskin like material which creates an almost living, growing sense of movement.

To the fashion layman the look is 90s kid meets playful, sci-fi tailoring modelled by the genetic elite. Ombre colour fades are styled with collar length skater boy hair, Mission Impossible sunglasses and what appears to be Justin Timerlake’s hat circa N*SYNC. Approach with caution—it’s safe to assume you don’t look like Erik Andersson.
