It was Lady Gaga who once sang, “I’m as free as my hair,” and if that’s true then then these 22 Brooklyn men and women must be the most liberated people on the planet.
StyleLikeU’s collaboration with Marc Baptiste comments on conformity and individuality through this short. Frizzy, curly, wavy, straight, long, short or bald—Baptiste has covered it all, and he uses these different hairstyles to state the importance of individualism.
The film flashes psychedelic colours across the bunch of styled strangers within the empty Brooklyn boiler room. The neon bounces off the neutral clothing and setting, illuminating the one thing that unites the group—their hair.
This is hair-ography in its finest form, with Twiggy inspired pixie cuts from the ‘60s, floor length locks from the ‘70s, perms from the ‘80s and punk spikes and corn-rows from the ‘90s.
With every hair flick Marc Baptiste has personified StyleLikeU’s tagline perfectly: “freedom of expression through personal style.”
