Back in the day I spent every Saturday morning consoling my hangover with a three-hour marathon of Rage. Take-away coffee cups in our shaking hands, my then flatmate and I would provide a running commentary on the fashion – good and otherwise – on display. From the 70s throwback in Got Til It’s Gone through to the futuristic appeal of Can’t Get You Outta My Head, filmclip fashion was inspiring, outrageous and completely – perhaps most importantly – unattainable. You were forced to replicate the look with op-shop buys, creative sewing techniques and customization of clothing you already owned.
Flash forward a decade and today’s coolest ensembles can be found, browsed and purchased less than a minute after watching the video. Case in point: The JC de Castelbajac jacket shown on Beyonce (looking better than usual) in the latest Gaga offering, Telephone.

I watched this video (mainly on mute because I cannot get into Gaga) for around 8 minutes then googled ‘Beyonce Gaga Blue Jacket’ and less than a second later found myself facing the checkout page for an online designer outlet.
Consumer help or creative hindrance?
