With the Olympics around the corner all eyes are on London — Somerset House and the circus that is London Fashion Week included. It wasn’t all eccentric buoyancy last week, though — London Fashion Week was polished and grown up this season. Stella McCartney, the English rose who defected to Paris 16 years ago, flew home to present an eveningwear collection and host an after party marked by table-top dancing, chair throwing and Alexa Chung levitating.
Alexander McQueen’s leading lady, Sarah Burton, was also in town, overseeing the McQ diffusion line take to the catwalk. And, proving that Britain’s a mover and shaker on a global stage, London played host to Italian brand Moschino Cheap and Chic.
Impressive show schedule aside, It Girls were papped, street style mavens snapped and off-site warehouse locations mapped (Thomas Tait’s show space was so off-the-beaten track that the invite literally was a map). In between attending (and recovering from) swanky after parties — some of which quickly turned from sedate affairs into something much, much more (see above re: Stella McCartney) — a number of trends were observed. Londoners are embracing the rain, flowers are blooming in winter, and silhouettes are peplum-hemmed and puffy. Click through to see our favorite trends from this European fashion season.
