Prabal Gurung is not worried about being trendy or cool; he’s just not that kind of guy. Not only is he determined to make clothes that fit and function, the Nepalese Fashion Designer says that if he is to bring anything to the world of fashion, he wants his clothes, like the woman of his homeland Nepal, sensual and beautiful, without being vulgar.

The ladies in his pre-fall 2012 video, directed by photographer Dan Martensen, embody this philosophy. Donning Prabal’s kaleidoscopic prints in traditional, feminine cuts with complementing furs, exaggerated cat’s-eye sunglasses and towering chrome booties, they jive to synthy 80s beats against a backdrop bathed in more psychedelia.

Prabal Gurung hopes to help people understand that in life, no matter what you do, you have to be happy. You have to love what you do and that’s all that matters. Did we mention that if he doesn’t stay true to his dreams, he’s got the high expectations of his mother to answer to? That’s right, he does. Whenever he releases a collection she says: “This is great, this is awesome, but what’s next?”
