Submission: Where Style Meets Jiu Jitsu

By Lauren Vadnjal / December 8th, 2011 in Fashion / / 734 views

Fashion film doesn’t usually include bruises, wrestling mats and Jiu Jitsu.  We never thought we’d see Abbey Lee wrestling other girls either, but that’s how it goes in the new short fashion film Submission showcasing UK designer Bella Freud’s new collection.

This interesting work between Freud (that’s Sigmund Freud’s granddaughter) and BAFTA award-winning director Martina Amati doesn’t stick to the conventions of fashion film—posing as a documentary on a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu group of young, good-looking females.  The cinematography is exceptional, Australian model Abbey Lee Kershaw makes it even easier on the eye, and Nick Cave even helped out with the music.  What a collaboration!

While the models spar and roll around on the floor in colourful pieces from Freud’s new ‘Fetish’ collection, we hear an internal monologue from the winner.  She shares her first memories of discovering fashion, and of the garments serving as a ‘protective armour’.

Submission is about how we wear our clothes, and what we can do with them.  It merges fashion, film and art together in a soft little package.
