One thing that was clear throughout Fashion Week here in New York was that the reigning kings of couture need to watch their backs; there’s plenty of new upstart designers getting ready to snatch those crowns out of their superiors’ jewel-dripping hands. Whilst perennial favorites like Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler continued to blow everyone’s minds, there was not-so-subtle whispers of a ‘blah’ collection from Diane Von Furstenberg and her ‘google glasses‘, and even rumors former-wunderkind Alexander Wang had ripped off Australian designer on the rise, Dion Lee.

In between the bigger shows sometimes it’s hard to keep track of the many smaller ones, and this year was no different, with the usual clamor from fashion’s newest to both prove themselves worthy of a showing alongside the greats and hold their own in a very big (hypothetical) pond. However, here at Portable we couldn’t help but agree that some of the biggest gems of the past week definitely went to the smaller guys. We’ve profiled 7 of the designers that King Karl and the rest should watch out for.
