Carnaby Street Queen Vivienne Westwood takes us behind the scenes of her London Fashion Week show for her Red Label SS 12 collection. The British designer, who brought modern punk fused with new wave fashion to the mainstream in the 70s, has ensured Red Label designs are signature Westwood with a twist of haute couture.
Held at Farringdon’s Smithfield meat market, models were dressed in the kooky designer’s hallmark pieces including expertly draped skirts made from the British flag, sleek and structured shiny bodices, and classically tailored checkered pants as they strutted their stuff to a soundtrack of a highly strung violin concerto, with their sky-high Marie Antoinette inspired hair and similarly avant-garde makeup in teal and fuchsia tones.
In true Westwood style, the OBE recipient’s show was nothing like a traditional runway event. Drawing inspiration from all forms of art, her wide appeal is showcased in the array of backstage guests including muse and nineties pin-up, Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson. The collection itself clearly draws comparisons from Renaissance art showcased in Westwood’s over the top gowns, which are juxtaposed against strong masculine suiting and Japanese inspired silhouettes.
