He would like reggae for one. He’d also be taller, have spectacular cheekbones and wear Sophnet. This short film presents the Spring/Summer 2012 collection from the Japanese menswear label, and it’s a visually appealing dream of what a modern James Dean would wear in the Land of the Rising Sun.
The style of the film combines black and white grainy images with clean, sharp images in color. The lighting is key; sunlight enters the picture at angles, highlighting the fit of the clothes and the relaxed vibe of the music. There are generous pans of the clothing, which feature checks, stripes and khaki combined with pastels and navy blues. Shorts and layered shirts are the order of the day, with collared long sleeve shirts the key.
Directed by Noriyuki Okoshi and produced by the Sophnet designer Hirofumi Kiyonaga, the film is a perfect blend of moody interiors and sunlit exteriors. They’ve proven that even if James Dean was born now, he would still be the coolest man around.
