Synopsis

In 2010, Winnipeg, MB was crowned 7-11’s “Slurpee Capital of the World” for the eleventh year running. The town of 700,000 consumes more of the sugar-heavy drinks than the rest of Canada combined, whether the temperature is 30 or -30 degrees.

Documentary film-maker Alex Perez travelled to Winnipeg to hear Slurpee stories from its greatest consumers. From the man with a Slurpee machine in his kitchen (who insists that Canadian Slurpees taste different to American ones), to the store manager whose daughters are practically “made out of Slurpees”, she drank so many while pregnant, The Frozen City is a funny and insightful look at a city’s unusual, shared obsession.

The Frozen City is a Portable Film Festival Official Selection for 2010.
