Say Anything (1989)

The first film to draw from the lasting legacy of John Hughes and a little brother of sorts to the Hughes canon of films, Say Anything introduced us to many hallmarks of the current ‘coming of age film’ such as: guys doing outrageous and totally unrealistic things to get girls, the ‘hot nerd’, and Cameron Crowe’s witty but sentimental dialogue.

Regardless of it’s now-cheesy narrative, it’s use of Phil Collins and that boombox scene, Say Anything is still a stalwart in any ‘teen film’ collection.
