London-based filmmaking duo Daniel Thomas Smith and Chris Read are in the business of making otherworldly, graceful, fashion-oriented films and their latest creation, The Waltz is no exception to their now-distinctive style. Despite having only worked together for a few months, the former research scientist and film graduate have already created films for fashion industry heavyweights such as Dr Martens, Nike Umbro, i-D, and Hypebeast.
Their new film “focuses on the idea of the birth of the universe, following their themes of triptychs from birth/life/death, or past/present/future,” in a “clean, modern, not over sentimental style,” as described by Thomas Smith.
Flashing lights set the scene in a dark room, which suddenly is filled with a deep red light focusing on dancer, Julia Barnett moving her body fluidly to the music before being doused in sunlight. The romantic and ethereal nature of the film is not entirely dissimilar to one by director Ian Bonhôte, which we recently featured.
Thomas Smith told Dazed Digital when the video premiered late last week:
“The film is ultimately about the birth of the universe, the chaos and the beauty that go hand-in-hand till its completion (whatever that may be). Also the idea of triptychs…Everywhere you look phenomena occurs in threes.”
The film will be debuting at Somerset House for next season’s London Fashion Week.
