Set in the year 1984, ‘Boy‘ tracks the life of, well…Boy (James Rolleston). A young kid living on the East Coast of New Zealand whose favorite person and favorite subject is Michael Jackson. From Taika Waititi the director of the hilariously awkward ’Eagle Vs Shark‘ and Oscar Nominated short ’Two Cars, One Night‘, ‘Boy’ is a film that must not be missed.
Boy lives in a semi-fantasy world where his absent father, Alamein (Taika Waititi), is ‘a deep sea treasure diver, soldier, captain of the football team’ and can apparently dance just as well as Michael Jackson, when in actuality he’s in prison for robbery. Alamein’s returning home and Boy’s dreams and fantasies of a hero father will be replaced with the harsh reality that his father, is, well, selfish, hopeless and a failure, not to mention a criminal.
With a similar zany stylistic approach to ‘Eagle Vs Shark’ and scrapbook animations, ‘Boy’ has already received great praise, made the official selection of this years Sundance film Festival and is the highest grossing New Zealand film of all time.
‘Boy’ will be released in selected cinemas on August 26.
