Country Culture: Sydney Travelling Film Festival

Stff

On my recent foray to the Central West, I was lucky enough to catch the Dubbo leg of The Sydney Travelling Film Festival. It may not seem like a big deal, but for someone who grew up away from the city, the chance to see some local and international film talent this far from the Big Smoke is fantastic.

Disregard the fact I was the youngest person in the audience by far (Dubbo still has a long way to go in regards to Youth Culture), it was a great event. We caught the Saturday evening session of Her Whole Life Ahead, an Italian ‘comedy’ (As a recent university graduate myself, I didn’t find the story of a philosophy-grad-come-call-centre-worker that funny).

But what I really loved was the re-introduction of the short film before the feature. I enjoy being able to watch new talent on the big screen, and was not disappointing by the 4 minute animation Dog With Electric Collar, Directed and Animated by Steve Baker, winner of Best Comedy at Tropfest 2004 with Confessions Of An Animation.

It is not until you leave the city that you realise how vital is it to have these travelling festivals that criss cross the country throughout the year. If you are living out of Sydney, the festival is on the way to Bryon Bay, Wollongong and Newcastle in May. It’s definitely worth a look.
