It’s not easy being Dakota ‘Golden Child Star’ Fanning’s sister—or should that be, it really is? Getting a head start from her big sister was pretty helpful, because by playing her—wait for it—sister in a few films, Elle Fanning has landed herself some pretty sweet roles, which we imagine would be even sweeter for someone who’s just turned fourteen. And the latest notch to add to her filmography belt is apparently a lead role in Belle & Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch’s years-in-the-making musical film.
Elle is reportedly in talks to appear in God Help the Girl, the film extension of the 2009 album of the same name, which was written by Murdoch and performed by an envisioned ‘girl group’. And while the screenplay kept evolving, the possibility of a feature-length film grew, and was ultimately realised through a trusty Kickstarter campaign which has raised over $120,000. The project has been a long time in the works, with the first song being written in 2003 and Belle & Sebastian creating three albums since, but the film is set to start filming this year.
At the moment they’ve got an open casting call posted ont their website and are welcoming video submissions—but we’ve got a feeling that there might be more than a few disappointed theatre students out there with the news that Elle may have scored their ticket to fame (and to perform some Belle & Sebastian-esque songs). So, does this mean that Elle Fanning can sing? While Wikipedia didn’t give us an answer, we did brush up on a thing or two about Elle that made us say repeatedly, “How can this girl be only fourteen (and a few days)?”
Clearly starting to see that she was falling behind, at the age of four she stepped it up and had her big break in The Door in the Floor. Since then she’s just been going to school and, you know, starring in Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere and as the little girl in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (looking very different with red hair). But what still gets us, a year later, is that, as a twelve-year-old, she starred in a Rodarte film. Didn’t know they made clothes for children.
But we have to give it to Elle ‘Next-Big-Thing’ Fanning. She’s a terribly good actor, and she looks amazing in Rodarte. And you know what, if they say she can skip and tap and sing in a musical—I’m going to believe it.
