Champions of Australian Hip Hop, Adelaide trio the Hilltop Hoods might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but to me they’re like a warm pot of chai on a cold morning.

All too often lumped in with their crass, unimaginative and less-talented counterparts, the Hoods are constantly avoiding clichés and expectations frequently assigned to those in the Aus Hip Hop community. From their groundbreaking 2007 collaboration with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (which resulted in the remix LP “The Hard Road Restrung”) to their new project, the Hoods are always ready to surprise and impress.

One of the standout tracks on their 2009 album ‘State of the Art’ (their fifth) was Parade of the Dead, an apolacyptic tale of zombie invasion and the war that followed. Rather than pairing the track with a gore-filled music video, the group chose to write and direct an accompanying feature-length zombie film, one of MC Suffa’s favourite genres.

The Hilltop Hoods first announced the film a couple on months ago in a radio interview on Triple J, after the project was complete. The trailer was recently released and, by the looks of things, we’re in for a fusion of performance, mockumentary and gory, flesh-eating horror. You can pre-order your DVD or Blu-Ray copy of Parade of the Dead ahead of its October release here.
