Men and women are never “just friends” in films. That is, unless one of them is gay, in love with someone else, or related by blood. And even if they do start off as buddies à la Harry and Sally at the beginning, there’s always a soppy ending where they kiss in the rain, jump across balconies, have their first slow dance and then prance right off to their happily ever after. Which is fine of course, and makes for a wonderfully tear-jerking, cinematic storyline… but what about those of us who retain purely platonic relationships with members of the opposite sex? Where’s our blockbuster? It’s a highly underrepresented theme that deserves some consideration (and to any filmmakers paying attention – I expect full credit when you pen your award-winning platonic love scripts)

So, can men and women ever be friends? Well, not according to Hollywood…
