Sometimes sitting behind the camera just isn’t enough. For whatever reason, whether it be a deep-seated desire to act, a lack of decent casting, or just a matter of truly adhering to the notion “if you want something done right, do it yourself”, many directors at some point have stepped out from behind the camera to immortalise themselves on film.

Director cameos have differing levels of success: some work, and others just… don’t. Because while sometimes these cheeky appearances are completely natural, bringing smiles to the faces of true fans who recognise their favorite auteurs popping onto their screens, other times they verge on cringe-worthy or even jeopardise the film by distracting the director into the lure of acting. And then, of course, there are those times where you’d never even know they were there.

The following is a selection of the latter; so don’t expect to see Clint Eastwood, Quentin Tarantino or Woody Allen on the list. From innocent bystanders, to alien lifeforms and even just faint reflections in distant glass; these cameos are the sneakiest of the lot. In fact, blink and you might just miss them…
