In 1996, director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson redefined the teen-slasher horror genre when he introduced a film that was referential to its predecessors, suspenseful and truly terrifying, instilling the fear of being home alone, making popcorn and answering the telephone into just about everybody who saw it.
Over a decade later, the Scream franchise gets revisited, promising more blood, thrills and self-aware characters that think they know The Rules of staying alive in a meta-horror masterpiece, but are probably going to end up as chopped liver. With the return of the core survivors Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), reporter and writer Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), dutiful officer Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and a plethora of cameos and hot new talent to kill off, Scream 4/Scre4m is looking to be bloody excellent, and we here at Portable are trembling in our boots with excitement.
In honour of this momentous event, we’ve assembled some of our favourite death scenes and some fun trivia that you might not already know from the original Scream trilogy. Before reading this, we advise that you turn on all your lights, disconnect your phone, and sit against a brick wall; you don’t want this to get all meta-meta on your ass.
