So accustomed to seeing self-portraits take the form of still photographs, when Brooklyn-based artist Vincent Skeltis showed us his series of video self-portraits, we were naturally curious.
What begins with seemingly banal day-to-day errands depicted by Skeltis in FRI 9:43am (the video above) soon turns darker, with the protagonist—and video’s sole crew member—writing a confession-heavy goodbye note to his children. We delved deeper into Skeltis’ previous films in his Self-Portrait series and found that WED 11:29am and TUES 10:07pm painted an image of this married father-of-two as an isolated, frequent drug-user with a knack for crafting engrossing, largely-silent short vignettes on his life.
Eager to know where the real Vincent Skeltis ended and the character he portrayed began, we spoke to him about his work on the series, the pros and cons of being a one-man film crew, and the inspiring power of Britney Spears.
We highly recommend you click through for the interview after watching the trio of films.
