Portable: You grew up in Hawaii and are now based in New York. How much did the landscape affect you growing up? And how does your living environment continue to influence you now?

Ahndraya Parlato: I was born in Hawaii, but left when I was a small child. I like to think that the landscape, colors, and wildness influenced me because these are some of my favorite things in life! I started making photographs in Upstate NY when I was an undergrad at Bard College, and quickly fell in love with the landscape there. I love how it’s both bleak and hopeful at the same time.

I am incredibly influenced by my environment. I am a creature of habit, so the image ideas I come up with are often sparked by something I have seen a million times; a thicket I pass in the car everyday, a common mannerism of someone I’m close to.
