Melbourne photographer Ben Capp was 15 when he realised he was balding. It took him a while to come to terms with it, and to realise that looks weren’t what mattered in life.
“I remember looking in the mirror a few years later contemplating shaving it all off. I thought ‘I’m ghostly pale, have freckles and ginger chest hair, I may as well be bald too’.”
The majority of Capp’s photographic experience lies in fashion advertising and editorial portraiture, but his latest series tackles a concept mostly disregarded in the world of fashion: inner beauty. The subject of his first solo exhibition, Capp’s portrait series My Friends Are Pretty is a reminder that we’re all pretty in one way or another. It’s a great idea for a series and the portraits are raw and funny, showing the subjects in a way that strongly conveys their personality and sense of humour.
My Friends Are Pretty runs from June 7 – 19 at No Vacancy gallery in Melbourne’s Federation Square.
