Jenny Harmsen is a photographer based in Boston, Massachusetts whose images of rugged mountain landscapes bring the beastly peaks to life. Despite having no formal photographic training, the 22 year-old has a skill for finding the character in lakes and valleys created by natural colors, and has no intention to move away to portraiture or other styles that involve humans who instinctively “act” in front of the lens.
“I guess I don’t find people that interesting to look at, relatively speaking,” Jenny told us. “Human bodies tend to interfere with the look I prefer. I do like to photograph my cats and dog, however. They don’t act at all, and I like to go back and fawn over their perfect faces.”
Jenny found her ultimate landscape experience in the hill of Iceland, though she doesn’t see her images from the trip doing justice to the grand memories she has of the country.
“I’ve been there twice now and can’t stay away. I think a lot of people are trying to get to a place they’ve made up in their head, and Iceland is as close as it’s gotten for me. My photos are diminshing to the actual experience, though. It’s unfortunate. When we finally arrived in Þórsmörk, Laugavegur’s terminus, a bunch of horses started piling into our campsite, seemingly out of nowhere. We were required to admit at least one of them into our tent, as per Iceland’s Constitution.”
A selection of Jenny’s prints are available for purchase in her web store.
