Lisa Wassman is a photographer living and working in Berlin. She was born and raised in the city, and is more than aware of its increasing popularity amongst those seeking artistic escape from other parts of the world.
“I think a lot of them come here because, compared to other big cities, Berlin is not expensive, but it’s also not a place to make a huge amount of money if you are not really successful,” Lisa explained. “I see a lot of people come here, live a very excessive “party and arty” life and after three years they find out they have to do something more productive and then they leave again. The artist fluctuation is huge and so is the fascination and the inspiration for young artist to come here.”

Lisa’s images are largely dark and highly saturated shots of women being taken out of their comfort zones. Whether they’re being battered by a gust of wind, drench in confetti or submerged in the ocean, her photos challenge what a portrait of a beautiful woman looks like.
“They are more transformable and mysterious—and sometimes—stronger than men. I like movement and things you can not control, like wind or water. I’ve been always more intereted in women as subjects.”
Lisa spent this past summer in Greece with a friend and her camera, and upon her return to the ever-changing city, she emersed herself in working on a book and visiting her favorite haunts. “I drive and walk around the city with my bike and watch people. I love to go to libraries, fleamarkets and old bookshops…It is not easy to speak about my favorite places,” she told us. “Because of the massive interest from the outside during the last five years those places are getting rare.”
