Xixi Cao’s nostalgic imagery is hazy, washed out and effortlessly cool. Surrounded by a bevy of babes, Cao manages to create a surreal, dreamlike environment within her natural surroundings of Adelaide, South Australia and beyond. Cao’s subtle, grainy exposures focus on a lust for life of those in their early twenties, indulging in a carefree cigarette or an otherworldly adventure.

While not a conscious element of her work, influences such as Helmut Newton have certainly added a highly stylised element to Cao’s work which tends to gravitate towards ultra fashionable creatures. Graduating from Psychology last year, Cao is also inspired by the overall chemical process of photography, giving her a distinctive and cautious eye. Furthermore, through her exploration of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), Cao creates a point of difference, blending art with science.
