Following their summer hit Money, moody Brooklyn band The Drums release their latest music video Days. This single from the album Portamento features an understated video that lets the visuals do all the work.
Director Patrick Roberts explores the lost-love-inspired lyrics throughout the video, marrying emotional scenes to lines such as, “…and I worked so hard, and I killed myself, and you broke my bones, and I sold my soul.” Roberts also directed their How It Ended video, and although the lyrics appear grim spelt out like that, the music itself is the epitome of Surf-Rock/New-Wave, reminiscent of the genius that is the Shins with a twist.
The video’s central subject Marc Faiella said on working with transgener icon Amanda Lepore, who also appeared in the video, “”It’s not every day that you get to have your makeup put on by Amanda Lepore––but I think it’s every tranny’s dream.”
The video appears to be in 3D with a hint of chiaroscuro lighting, gritty video realism and scenes awash with overlaid imagery—which all in all make for a pretty graphic video experience. Roberts, however, does send the all-important redemptive message home, which that stops it from being a total buzz kill.
