San Fransisco duo Girls are part of the “new oldies” scene, with songs that sound like Buddy Holly rehearsing in his parents’ garage, adding the perfect amount of grit to the otherwise peppy tunes. Their recently released LP ‘Father, Son, Holy Ghost’ (a polished follow-up to their 2009 debut, ‘Album’) is full of slick pop tunes, with frontman Christopher Owens’ voice sounding slightly more refined than on their preceding album. Each track is drenched in nostalgia of the 60s and 70s, the band drawing influences from everyone from Fleetwood Mac to Elvis Costello. Honey Bunny, the second single, is a sun-soaked Beach Boys knockoff that serves as an anthem for hopeless romantics everywhere.
The video, directed by Ivan Shumaker and band member Chet “JR” White, is perfect for the song it’s representing. The song itself is saccharine, melodic and impossible not to bop along to, and the video documents a silly romantic drive on a summer’s day.
The sense of humor of ex-Children of God member Owens is what really makes it. Decked out in a velvet croptop and tiny sunglasses, he cruises the Bay Area until he finds his dream girl (played by Owens’ real-life girlfriend), lamenting that other girls “don’t like [his] bony body / they don’t like [his] dirty hair”. When one girl finally takes the bait and decides to ride shotty, she gets to wear his jean jacket, which totally seals the deal.
‘Father, Son, Holy Ghost’ was released earlier this month on NYC label True Panther Sounds.
