Sydney based songwriter and musician Darren Hanlon has been a fixture in the Australian music biz since the mid 1990s, having played in a number of prominent local bands such as The Simpletons, The Lucksmiths and The Deerhunters. And it is no wonder why he’s stuck around when you hear his amazing solo efforts; minimal and bare, the careful combination of honest guitar melodies with Hanlon’s sweet vocal stylings result quite simply in a stripped-back, grass-roots sound. As is the case with the latest single and title track to be released from the forthcoming ‘Butterfly Bones’ EP, with the track accompanied by an equally beautiful and feel-good clip courtesy of Hanlon’s long time collaborator (it is their fifth video together) and director, Natalie Van Den Dungen. Natalie also showcased one of these films in which she collaborated with Hanlon in the Portable Film Festival last December, check it out here.
In what could could easily be mistaken for a sweet and nostalgic short film rather than a regular music video, the stunning backdrop of a dry, rural town nestled somewhere in faraway New South Wales, provides for the type of scenic visuals that make the clip able to hold its own in the film world. However, it is Van Der Dungen’s immaculate execution of a story about a mother and son set to to the folk-pop tones of Hanlon’s songwriting, which really makes this clip a pleasure to watch. Cinematic and emotive, it is easy to get lost in the story that Hanlon and Van Den Dungen so often create so well.
The ‘Butterfly Bones’ EP is out Feburary 18.
