If you weren’t living beneath a rock during the last few months of 2009 you would have had the pleasure of discovering Dead Man’s Bones. A musical duo made up of ‘Half Nelson’ actor Ryan Gosling and his friend Zach Shields, Dead Man’s Bones released a surprising self titled debut that seemed to even surprise them.
Drawing inspiration from Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion and with a self proclaimed ‘doo wop’ influence, Gosling and Shields crafted a hauntingly beautiful album. With the help of the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir who feature throughout the entire album, the songs take on an eerie persona taking you into a world of werewolves, zombie children and broken hearts.
Almost a year later they have released a new clip for one of my personal favorites ‘Pa-Pa-Power’. At almost 13 minutes in length and with a strange nightmarish interlude this clip is almost more documentary then music video. Set in a special needs-retirement home, Dead Man’s Bones accompanied by the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir, perform for the elderly residents.
With incredibly touching footage which is only enhanced by the documentary hand held style, this clip further cements the importance of this musical collaboration and reflects how deeply involved both Gosling and Shields are. ‘Pa Pa Power’ was written and directed by Dead Man’s Bones. Damn their ever-growing talent.
