We’re not even really 100% sure how you pronounce AXOLOTL, but damn, do we like their haunting new track, “Electricity”. Sparse and haunting, layered production gives way to a lush soundscape, mimicked in the simple yet stylised imagery of human bodies floating in water that comprises the accompanying music video. Slightly surreal and with a definite 90s aesthetic that brings together contrarian notions of nihilism and hope, the video for “Electricity” is haunting and inspiring, like a ghost that shows you what was, what could have been, and what is still to come.
All the way from Melbourne, Australia, AXOLOTL is Ella Thompson and Dustin McLean. With a joint love of cinematic, lyrical songwriting and citing influences like Little Dragon, Leonard Cohen, Feist, St. Vincent and Radiohead, it’s clear where the band gets their vaguely indefinable, electronica-pastiche sound.
