While shows like Mad Men have done well to glorify 1960s American life, Portland indie-punk band The Thermals have taken a decidedly cheekier, DIY approach towards 60s nostalgia in their new video for Not Like Any Other Feeling. Revving up the charm with phoney spacesuits, Cheez-Whiz snacks and a mail-order plastic trophy, the band engages in an animated space-launch that’s been created almost entirely out of chalk and paper.
The video combines hi-definition visuals with low-rent set-pieces, such as chalkboard Mission Control computers, a cardboard TV (advertising a spinning can of Tang, of course), and the band floating around a chalkboard galaxy eating white-chalk stars. The project was completed over the course of six months by Seattle-based animator-cum-director Clyde Petersen, and a veritable army of volunteers. Owing to the massive amount of work on the project, he kept a blog specifically to update readers on the video’s progress.
The band’s latest album, ‘Personal Life,’ is currently available on Kill Rock Stars.
