Gotye and Kimbra

Gotye and Kimbra are probably our two favourite artists from the Southern Hemisphere at the moment, and Gotye’s latest single Somebody I Used To Know reconfirms exactly why. With the recent well deserved hype that surrounds the New Zealand soulful songstress Kimbra, and Gotye’s impressive multi-instrumentalist skills you can imagine how excited we were to see this collaboration.  This is one of the most captivating videos we have seen recently and it’s nice to know that a small budget and a simple idea can have a big impact. Michael Bay needs to get with it!

Directed by Natasha Pincus—one half of Starkraving Productions (the other half being cinematographer Warwick Field)— who is bringing body art back in a big way.  Opting for stop motion rather then super CGI-whizz-bang animation overload, this approach enhances Kimbra’s and Gotye’s natural musical chemistry.  Pincus’ previous works include Sarah Blasko’s We Won’t Run and Paul Kelly’s God Told Me To, making it clear she has a knack for conveying raw emotion in a way that packs a punch so powerful it leaves our heads are spinning for a few hours after. Not to mention, the song is absolutely amazing.

Somebody That I Used To Know is out 11 July and is taken from the new album ‘Making Mirrors’ in stores 19 August.

Such a great track, really beautiful and well executed. Kind of seems a little bit inspired by one of our favorites:
