We here at Portable just love Australian multi-instrumentalist Wally De Backer, AKA Gotye. His lush voice manages to croon relatable tunes so effortlessly that it’s eerie; human nature is as addicting as it is fascinating. We posted about his bittersweet duet with Kimbra, Somebody I Used To Know this past summer. The song found him locked in a post-breakup haze, full of the confusion and resentment that usually comes standard.
If you’re more of a fighter, Easy Way Out, the latest single off his new record ‘Making Mirrors’, is probably your song. Gotye’s not trying to hang on this time, instead—much like the title suggests—he just wants out. The song is a punchy, powerful ode to moving on. The lyrics spin a “it’s not me, it’s you” kind of story—Gotye’s done feeling sorry for himself. To further the empowerment motif, the video features a Manga-style animation of a man running from a city and possible alien abduction. The striking color scheme of red and black evokes fiery vibes reminiscent of someone ready to fight.
