Isolation and dehydration seep through Venice Beach boardwalks in a haunting music video for tech-noir aficionados HTRK (pronounced ‘Hate Rock’). Directed by Nathan Corbin from Brooklyn-based band Excepter, the hypnotic film clip follows the struggle for survival of two alien beings who deck themselves out in monochrome and melancholy after crashing into the City of Angels.
HTRK’s sexual, bass-driven Bendin hallows throughout the film, echoing like subtle explosions of dynamite. Band members Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang play deadpan extraterrestrials to perfection, evoking a sense of dreaming even when limited to ghostly stills of black and white, existing purely as exiles in a foreign land.
This particular tale of desolation is reminiscent of Chris Marker’s science fiction film La Jetee, however Bendin‘s musical and graphic undertones are far more arousing than electrocution-triggered time travel.
