Hunx is at the forefront of the “new oldies” genre, mixing sugary sweet vocals with the harsh truths of relationships. ‘Too Young To Be in Love,’ the sophomore release from California’s Hunx and His Punx, tells of dilemmas no different than the ones sung about by the Shangri-Las over two decades ago.
In Lovers Lane, Hunx, backed by his oft-beehived Punkettes, sickly wishes for kisses and to run his fingers through his dreamboy’s hair. Unfortunately, he’s missed his chance—in a Susie Q-esque turn of events, we find out he’s died, leaving Hunx all alone with only his memories.
Despite the sad context of the song itself, the video, directed by filmmaker/musician/artist Hannah Lew of Grass Widow, has a feel good vibe overall. Maybe it’s the hazy lo-fi effects so indicative of a slow summer’s day; maybe it’s because we get to see Hunx all dolled up while he tries to hitch a ride to Lovers Lane. When he finally makes it there, he does so blowing kisses and holding a bunch of heart-shaped balloons. He just may love again after all.
