Returning with a more rock-oriented follow up to their 2007 debut ’†’, French duo Justice return with their sophomore effort ‘Audio, Video, Disco’. Made up of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay, Justice rose to prominence with their single, D.A.N.C.E., which featured an up-tempo sound that has, surprisingly, taken a backseat on this record.
With hint of 70s arena rock and guest vocals from Diamond Nights‘ Morgan Phalen, Vincenzi Vendetta of Midnight Juggernauts and UK singer Ali Love on first single Civilization, Justice’s music has always been about creating listenable music rather than how well the pair can play a melody. Divulging the intricacies of the new record, Justice told Pitchfork;
“We do music in a really naive way. This album is like a prog record in acceptable proportions because everything ends up being more simple, partly due to our limitations as musicians; we like simple music that provides simple emotions. The problem with virtuosity and shredding is that it often goes against plain emotions. We never listen to music for the technical qualities of it.”
Following the success of their first single, Justice now give us the title track, Audio, Video, Disco with accompanying video directed by labelmates So Me—the group responsible for the D.A.N.C.E video. Beginning almost like a Queen video, the bird’s-eye views is that of a sophisticated French recording studio with intricate and subtle comedic elements.
