Wavves – “Post Acid” from GreenLabelSound on Vimeo.
Nothing says “goodbye winter/hello sunshine” like some good old fashioned 90’s lovin’ lo-fi pop. And when you’re listening to the Wavves’s latest LP King of the Beach while you’re driving at 80kmp/h with your window wound optimistically down all the way, trying to lick a ‘lil spring breeze on the tip of your tongue you probably wouldn’t suspect that these warm coconut-oil ‘n’ board wax tunes were penned by a troubled soul. And while frontman Nathan Williams has struggled with substance abuse and all that hoo-ha, he wouldn’t want you to care. So try not to. Resume flailing your hair and jerking around to their frantic fuzzy tunes.
This colorfully bizarre video for the single Post Acid, directed by Patrick O’Dell, is said to be the brainchild of Williams who wanted to make a clip based loosely on the plot of Encino Man. But instead of a caveman he wanted an alien, and the man behind the alien happens to be pro-skater Kevin “Spanky” Long. The trippy intro to the song is done by a former MTV VJ, music icon, John Norris and from there on in you get a pretty good idea of what life is like, post-acid.
