L-I-V-I-N’ like Dazed and Confused

Remember that first time you watched Dazed and Confused and you weren’t sure whether to be offended or enamored with David Wooderson? Tragic sweet talker, incessantly sleazy and a victim of too tight shirts, but…he just had some kind of inexplicably revolting and enchanting charm, you know?  It turns out that Wooderson was right all along— he keeps getting older, but high school girls stay the same age. It’s twenty years on and he’s at it again, this time in Butch Walker and the Black Widows‘ latest release, Synthesizers.

Seeing Matthew McConaughney portray the spitting image of his younger, Wooderson self made us giddy with D&C nostalgia and conflicted with what twenty years of L-I-V-I-N’ has done to our most precious scumbag. This time the mo’ just looks plain seedy and the pants painfully tight, but, he’s somehow still got that love-to-hate thing going on. Like the YouTube comments on this video can testify, there’s a whole gang of D&C fans who’ve unintentionally fallen in love with this song, purely for Wooderson value (that and the song’s distinct similarity to Come on Eileen—it’s a nostalgia explosion, here). Butch Walker and the Black Widows’ album ‘The Spade’ is out now and has instantly gained a whole lot of cred in our books. Alright alright alright.
