Laura Marling Draws Contemporary Dance Card

Rather than go the way of a brooding three-minute video, Laura Marling has done a classic Laura Marling and given us something completely different—a fully choreographed contemporary dance routine.

This ‘unofficial’ dance film clip for I Was Just A Card—from her 2011 third album, ‘A Creature I Don’t Know—seems like just the right way to express the bare emotion of the song.  The young dancers from Beyond Words Dance Company throw themselves around to the strengths of the song, all in the most graceful of ways, and you begin to think how the track could possibly be matched to anything but contemporary dance?

And how exactly did this dance company from Illinois score such a gig?  Artistic Director Kate Jablonski was contacted by Laura after she uploaded a YouTube video of Beyond Words performing a routine to her Ghosts, and was later asked to create one for I Was Just A Card.  Jablonski choreographed and co-directed the whole thing, drawing from the imminent highs and lows and lyrics of the song.  You can see a making-of here.
